Sumner is a small Pierce County city with a historic downtown, established neighborhoods and strong connections to the rest of the South Sound. Unlike some of the larger suburban communities nearby, Sumner has a more compact, walkable town center built around Main Street, local businesses, parks and the Sounder commuter rail station.
The city developed in the Puyallup and White River valley and has deep agricultural roots tied to hops, berries, daffodils and rhubarb. Sumner still celebrates that history today and is widely known for its downtown events, Daffodil Festival traditions and its nickname as the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World.
Downtown is one of Sumner’s defining features. Main Street serves as the city’s traditional commercial core, with local shops, restaurants, community events and historic buildings creating a noticeably different atmosphere from the larger retail corridors found elsewhere in Pierce County.
Reuben A. Knoblauch Heritage Park sits directly in the historic downtown area and serves as a gathering space for concerts, festivals and other community activities.
The city is also continuing to plan for future growth around its Town Center while preserving the character of its established downtown.
Housing in Sumner includes older homes near the historic core, established residential neighborhoods, newer construction and properties located closer to the edges of the city.
Because Sumner developed outward from its original downtown and rail station, some neighborhoods have a distinctly traditional residential character, with mature trees and homes built across several different eras. Newer development can be found farther from the historic core and in surrounding East Pierce County communities.
Sumner has several neighborhood parks, including Loyalty Park, the city’s oldest park, and Heritage Park downtown. The city’s parks and trails help reinforce its smaller-scale community feel while connecting residents to outdoor spaces throughout the valley.
Sumner’s agricultural history also remains part of its identity. The surrounding valley historically supported crops including rhubarb and daffodils, traditions that continue to influence local festivals and community events.
The Sumner Sounder Station is located downtown and provides commuter rail service along the corridor between Lakewood and Seattle, including stops in Tacoma, Puyallup, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila.
That rail access, combined with nearby highway connections, makes Sumner especially appealing to buyers who want a smaller community while still needing access to larger employment centers throughout the Puget Sound region.
